Intel and BT Launch Collaborative Research Laboratory

New research could lead to new platforms in the telecommunications infrastructure, as well as new technologies and services to connected communities

– Intel Corporation and BT establish a collaborative research laboratory.

– The BT and Intel Co-Lab will explore, test and evaluate proof points in network function virtualization and connected communities.

– The lab is the latest member of Intel Labs Europe – Intel’s European R&D network.

LONDON, United Kingdom, May 24, 2013 – Today Intel Corporation and BT announced the opening of a collaborative research laboratory at Adastral Park, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich. The research is expected to enable platform advances in telecommunications infrastructure and new technologies and services to facilitate sustainable and intelligent management of resources.

As the number of devices, users and services grows rapidly, network operators require new and innovative ways to manage and deploy network capacity in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The research conducted at the BT and Intel Co-Lab will thus investigate two main areas: Network functional virtualization (NFV) and connected communities.

NFV has the potential to deliver cost reduction in both the deployment and operation of network capabilities using standard high volume server platforms such as Intel® Xeon® processor based server systems. It does so through shortening development and test cycles, simplifying services deployment and enabling more efficient service operations. The research in NFV will lead to validated use cases, system level proof points and future network service applications for this disruptive innovation in telecoms network architectures. It will also engage the wider telecommunications ecosystem in evolving NFV technologies.

In the area of connected communities, the BT and Intel Co-Lab will focus its research on providing innovative solutions that enable sustainable, intelligent management of resources and high quality of life in the locations where people work and live. Connected communities are focused on using innovative technologies to connect people to people, businesses and governments. Examples of these include the optimization of the use of energy in homes, the improvement of the utilization of buildings or even the optimization of transportation systems.

The BT and Intel Co-Lab will build reference implementations at BT’s Research and Development Centre, Adastral Park, where technology can be developed, evaluated, and integrated before deployment into BT and Intel activities in the form of proofs of concept or field trials.

The Co-Lab will facilitate BT and Intel in working together to support activities associated with the deployment and use of sensors and actuators into physical environment (including topics such as future cities or Internet of things). Both Intel and BT will contribute researchers, hardware, software and other assets as required to deliver a rich and innovative research program.

About Intel Labs Europe

Intel R&D/Innovation in Europe is driven by a network of research labs, product development labs and innovations labs spanning the region, as well as a variety of Intel business units. Intel Labs Europe was formally established in early 2009 as the central means of coordinating activities across this diverse and extensive network, and to strengthen and improve Intel’s alignment with European R&D. Today, Intel’s Europe research and development network, Intel Labs Europe, consists of almost 50 labs employing more than 4000 R&D professionals.
